Self-care vs. full care horse boarding near Jacksboro, Texas.

Who feeds, who checks on your horse, and how often you need to be there. A plain comparison of the three ways to board at Rank Equine.

In short

Self-care boarding means you handle your horse’s daily care yourself, with 24/7 access to the ranch and your horse. Full care horse boarding means Rank Equine handles the daily care for you: feeding, attention and supervision. Hybrid boarding sits in between and is built around your schedule. All three are offered on Rank Equine’s 110-acre ranch near Jacksboro, Texas, about an hour northwest of Fort Worth. Call 817-600-3575 for rates.

The Basics

What is horse boarding?

Boarding a horse means keeping it at someone else’s property, such as a ranch, barn or stable, instead of at home.

The owner pays for the space and, depending on the type of board, for some or all of the daily care. That is the whole difference between the options: who does the daily work. With self-care, you do. With full care, the barn does. A hybrid splits it. The terms are used loosely from barn to barn, so at any facility, ask exactly what is included before you sign.

Which Is Right for You?

Pick the board that fits your life.

There is no best option, only the one that matches your schedule, your distance from the ranch and how hands-on you want to be.

i.

Self-Care fits if…

  • You live close enough to get to the ranch every day
  • You want to handle feeding and care your own way
  • You enjoy daily time at the barn with your horse
ii.

Full Care fits if…

  • Work, school or travel make daily trips hard
  • You live too far away to come out every day
  • You want someone checking on your horse daily
iii.

Hybrid fits if…

  • You want to do some of the care, but not every day
  • Your schedule changes with seasons or competitions
  • Neither of the other two quite fits

The more time you spend with your horse, the better the relationship, and that shows up in the arena. Whichever option you choose, you are welcome to visit and ride on your own schedule.
